FAURÉ REQUIEM AND POULENC GLORIA THE CULWICK CHORAL SOCIETY MARY HEGARTY (soprano) TRISTAN CALDWELL (baritone), DAVID LEIGH (Organ) BERNIE SHERLOCK (Conductor) The Culwick is delighted to bring to Cork their anniversary concert performance of two great choral works by French composers: the beautiful Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and the jubilant Gloria! by Francis Poulenc. Two men of faith, both French, both composers. Two very different creative responses to the death of loved ones. Two exquisite masterpieces. The Culwick Choral Society – in its 110th anniversary year – presents fine performances of Fauré’s beautiful and much-loved Requiem and the lesser-known, joyously energetic Gloria by Poulenc. Fauré’s Requiem was written during the years separating the death of his father in 1885 and of his mother in 1888 and has a special place in the hearts of audiences. Unlike other similar works, it makes no mention of the fires and torments of hell, concentrating instead on consolation and hope. The Gloria was one of many works Poulenc composed when the loss of a dear friend in a horrific road accident inspired his whole-hearted return, aged 35, to the Christian faith. In ideal contrast with the Fauré, however, the Gloria is a work full of life and celebration. The Culwick will be joined by special guests, the internationally renowned soprano Mary Hegarty (a native of Cork, and one of Ireland’s best-known and best-loved sopranos), bass Tristan Caldwell and organist David Leigh, all under the direction of leading Dublin-based choral conductor Bernie Sherlock. Tickets: €15 (unreserved seating). On sale at Pro Musica, Oliver Plunkett Street, Tel. (021) 4271659, also from the Cathedral Shop, and at door.

If there is any excuse for a good time then the Irish people will use it. All over Ireland, in every county, town and village you will encounter a festival or event. The excuse may involve food, art, music, sport, history, matchmaking, agriculture, dancing or just about anything else, and will always end in one astronomical party. So before you arrive in Co. Cork remember to visit The National Events Calendar at www.irishdays.com.
